Iran is a terror state. They have their own terror networks around the world. They give a wink and a nod to al quaeda. The argument that they would use surrogate terrorists to implement nuke attacks is probably alot truer of iran than iraq. In todays complex world, i believe that we need an imbalance of power in our favor to prevail over these types of folks. If the iranians cant live with the Russian compromise, the west should bring them to heel in some manner. I dont think iranian nukes are designed for deterrence. I think they are designed to be a shield for various aggressions in the region and will unleash a nuke arms race that will include the saudis, egyptians etc. As far as the nukes relate to israel, i personally do not believe the mullahas would trade tehran for tel aviv but the right wing fanatic now running the show might just, given his beliefs. I dont think he has the power to do it now though but i worry about what happens if things get unsettled and the mullacracy begins to collapse and non-fundamentalist alternative appears backing the fanatics into a corner. Last desparate act of such a state could be that tehran for telaviv trade.
This issue is way complex and our greatly differing views on israel/palestine does not automatically mean we have to be on different sides of this one, although it seems we will be.
