re: "you have mostly complacent, uninformed citizens, a press corp that just reads talking points from press releases"

These two are very closely related.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

I think its more than just complacent citizens. I think way too many citizens support what Bush is doing. Its very sad but I think very true. Once again, the uproar over the wire tapping is coming from the members of the press instead of from the people. The average guy should be outraged instead his response answer: wiretapping is good...they are checking on the terrorists; not realizing that there is nothing to stop them from checking on him.

Unfortunately, the American population appears to be poorly educated and informed.......and its showing in a lot of different ways. I realize that I tend to be more negative but I just think there is way too much evidence to support what I am saying. It seems not only do you have to fight the good fight but you have to educate people as you go along. Its nuts! This stuff should be at a gut level.

"Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"

A complacent and uninformed citizenry. Don't you remember all the complaints about how negative the news was? How they should focus more on uplifting stories instead of all the things that were going wrong? The popularity of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous? Ok, they weren't complacent at the time, but reeling from shell shock, but with the egging on of the conservatives, there was a great call for the reporting of non-news, and those that cooperated got rewarded. That, and silently allowing all the news outlets to slowly be held in fewer and fewer hands has led directly to our present situation.

So at this point in time, most Americans wouldn't recognize real reporting if it bit them in the ass...
