"and there was only one political discussion, and I started it."

Well, you were lucky. I got in a few I didn't start and it wound up with a continual stream of winger talking points, none of which bore much relationship to each other, other than they questioned your assumed position on a variety of issues. I suspect strongly that if I had a strong enough stomach to read Coulter's book on how to talk to a liberal, I'd have a better understanding of where those points came from. I haven't encountered so much raw, open racism in decades. And that was in the context of a Klan rally. Inevitably, I would have a finger pointed at me and the truly brilliant phrase, "you are a liberal and I don't have to talk to you!" is issued and they stalk off in righteous indignation.

We are experiencing the O'Reillying of America.

Part of the problem is the Rita victims have been told the reason why little is happening is all of the resources are going to New Orleans. Which doesn't make sense because there ain't much happening in NO either.

re: I think its more than just complacent citizens. I think way too many citizens support what Bush is doing. Its very sad but I think very true.

I use complacent because I don't think they even think about it. I must have been to a half dozen holiday parties, and there was only one political discussion, and I started it.

People just are not involved... I stand by "complacent". Now that obviously doesn't apply to the wingnuts.

Yes, and I guess I was talking about the wingnuts. They are the ones calling for a third term for Bush and demanding drilling in the ANWR. They are openly anti Muslim including against those in the US....wanting them deported. They are the Nazis.

The 'good' Germans are your friends. Most of them are nice people...............their work is going well.....they tend not to be racist although they kind of like that their leader is telling the rest of the world to stick it......but they won't admit that publicly.

My cousin called during New Years day.....he and his buds were hunting in TX. They drove through ALA, MS, and LA.....while skirting NO. He was telling me how bad it was.......that debris is still piled along the roads.....little is getting down. I thought he was getting ready to criticize Bush. Nope! The task is too much for the gov't.......they are overwhelmed. No one can do the job.......the poor Bush administration has too big a load.

Then he gets to NO. He thinks its time to accept that NO may have to go......either that or that it has to be a much smaller city. This is the same guy who has raved about NO since he got out of his residency and could afford to eat at its best restaurants. For five years, I have listened to how NO is so hot.....the coolest city in the country. And now he's ready to give it up.

He's sounds just like a talking paper for the RNC. I don't get it. His father is my uncle. My uncle was a professor...not liberal liberal but not conservative either. I have similar politics to my uncle......both my cousins, his sons.......are no where near where I am or their father. They are both very bright......very successful. I just don't get it any more. I've never been radical......was not radical when I was in school and yet, I viewed by most of my family like I am an extremist. I thought maybe it was because I live on the West coast.......but my views are not hugely different from yours or CJ's or Al's......and you guys don't live on the West coast.

I really don't get it at all........and I am tired of objecting. I told the thread about the woman in my cohort who is a Bush supporter. Ever since I joked with the science majors that they will have to learn ID if they want to teach. It was the only time I got into any kind of politics in class, and now she bad mouths me every chance she gets.

Its as if the world is round but everyone is claiming that its flat. That's the way I feel right now about the way things are.
