Vaughan Plant here. Vaughan will combine the plants’ work forces, but will lay off about 200 people beginning in early March.Closing the E.C. Dodson factory, also here, will reduce Vaughan’s employment to 365 and its manufacturing space to 300,000 square feet. At the peak of activity five years ago, the company employed about 1,500 people and its plants covered about 1.5 million square feet, estimated Bill Vaughan, president and CEO. Employees will receive a severance package, employment counseling, and future employment assistance via a job fair. Vaughan Furniture will also apply for benefits for the affected employees under the Trade Act Assistance Program. “The plant closing is by no means a reflection on the fine employees of Vaughan Furniture Co., who have been improving efficiencies all this past year,” said Vaughan. “This move is a direct result of the increasing popularity of cheaper-priced Chinese imports as well as increased costs associated with continued domestic production. Vaughan Furniture Co. has made every effort to keep both factories operating as long as possible.” After the closing, the company will operate the B.C. Vaughan Plant, the Chestnut Creek Veneer Plant, the T.G. Vaughan Distribution Center and the corporate office, all in Galax. Taylor George Vaughan, Sr. and his brother Bunyan C. Vaughan founded Vaughan Furniture in Galax in 1923.
