"You don't want the TV on in the living room every time you want to play music"

My TV boots in a few seconds and shuts down even faster. Once you have chosen the playlist you don't have to keep it on.

Alternatively boot up a laptop and drive the unit via Remote Desktop.

I actually like the onscreen visualizations when music is playing.

I have pretty much designed the way everything will work. Presently we have a hi-def TV with a 5:1 Onyko A/V receiver driving the surround sound and a regular DVD player. I will replace the DVD player with the "living room PC". I may even build the PC into an old amplifier box I have laying around.

The Onyko has a control interface, they call it the RI interface. I wonder if I can get that driven from the PC too? If not I can always drive the Onyko from the PC with an IR i/f by attaching an IR led close to the front of the Onyko.
