A small display with simple interface as part of the "box" would make it into a product (as opposed to white box)

Right. The idea would be to make it as non-computery as possible, the way TIVO and IPOD do.

And a nice feature would be to add a TIVO-like capability for radio - let you listen without the commercials.

Dear Joe:

Why do you need a display? If you have a TV, you can use that, but for normal operation, you don't even need a display. Use voice command. Any wireless headset will do and most PCs have enough power to do voice recognition and command. Output of the system can be mixed in to audio output, or if silent operation is desired, through the headset only.

So to play your favorite playlist you would say "command mode on, play." For going to next (previous) in playlist say, "next (previous)." To increase (decrease) the volume say, "louder (softer)." To play a given song say, "play quote smoke on the water unquote." To play a different playlist say, "change to playlist showtunes, play." To keep from the PC from misconstruing conversation with commands say "command mode off."

You get the picture (sound). $10 for a headset is a lot cheaper and easier to use than trying to read some tiny LCD from across the room. And it is expandable to other things like turning on the lawn sprinklers, shading the windows, turning on the lights and playing movies. It also would keep the kiddies from playing songs you don't want them to as their voices are recognized as different users and thus be restricted in what they do.
