I know you have trouble remembering this, but I also know people with first hand experience. I expect most people here do. The experience of one person, or the people who you know, are not what we should use when we design laws that end up incarcerating a huge portion of our population. We need to use broad statistics, and models of other prohibition experiments- we have both those tools- and we have the experience of other countries to draw from as well. Alcohol, probably used by 99% of addicts, is a gateway drug too- but that's not a good reason for making it illegal, when to make it illegal causes more problems than having it illegal solved.
