LETTERMAN V. O'REILLY

John Derbyshire
The Corner

I caught some of that -- the clips O'Reilly put on his show last night. (The whole thing is on the FNC website, but I ain't THAT interested.) Letterman was horrible -- sneering & rude, his entire attitude "Look what the cat brought in." This was showbiz lefty arrogance raised to the n-th power. What an ignorant jerk. O'Reilly was a gent. I have my problems with the Big Mick, with his pomposity and populism, but even Jonah would have been rooting for him in this encounter.

My wife and I sat through one episode of the Letterman show a few years ago. Rosie took an instant strong dislike to the guy, and has refused to watch him since. Her instincts were, as they always are, very sound.

RE: LETTERMAN

Brent Baker's report on Letterman's crude posturing for Cindy Sheehan made the MRC a hot link for the Huff-Posters and the DU types. Urgh.

But I think this is an interesting sign of the times.

After 9/11, Letterman had on another biased-media star (Dan Rather) weeping for his country and pledging support for his president. We all know how long that lasted. Letterman's Cindy-boosting -- her loss makes her an oracle who cannot be criticized -- shows how the liberal media culture no longer sees a war on terrorism worth waging.
