We help other people who damage themselves. We don't let indigent suicide victims bleed to death, just because they injured themselves. We are a big enough people, we can afford to help people who have substance addictions- whether they are alcohol, or drugs. People with diabetes often ate badly and "damaged" themselves. Fat people get all sorts of health problems, too many to name here, and they cost billions- they can't all pay for their health care- but we care for them anyway, because most of us are not cruel. You can, of course, adopt a strict parent model where people bleed to death or whatever, for their "sins". I feel that most people who really need help, got to where they are because they couldn't really stop themselves. When people CAN do better, they do do better. I never chose to harm myself, because it was never something I wanted to do. I assume that's a genetic gift. I don't want to punish people who flunked the genetic lottery.
