After all those years of saddam/baath/sunni oppression of shiaa, the chickens are now coming home to roost and its the sunnis who have to stop the violence if they want to survive and share in a new iraq.

They are by various accounts already receiving payback at the hands of the new Iraqi security forces. I expect Shia violence against Sunnis to result in what amounts to ethnic cleansing in Baghdad, and Kurds will end up booting the Arabs out of their regions to regain control. Indeed, the Sunnis have been asking for it for a long time, so perhaps they deserve it. But the results are not good for either Iraq, or US interests in the region.

What I see happening in 2006 is the US increasingly placed in the position of trying to keep the new government nice. We will spend our time policing the Shia security forces as they target Sunnis. Meanwhile, Sunnis are blowing us up. Great place to be.
