"For the US to push for a three state solution will look like failure to most people. "

It WILL be a failure for the chimpistration, which has been patheticly promoting a single-state, federal Iraq from the beginning. They misread the tensions beneath Saddam's dictatorship, and have been promoting a doomed solution for three years. Remember that Bush didn't even know of the ethnic divisions until Condi splained it to him! Since they CAN'T be worng ( even though they have been EVERY TIME ), they'll continue to flog this dead horse of a federal Iraq.

I'm looking for the Kurds to lead the way, with their own military, police forces, oil ministry and political program.
The Shiia won't be far behind them, with Iran's help, if necessary. As you say, they have 27 years of payback to extract from the Sunni - why shouldn't they? It's THEIR time now, along with the Kurds.

"The split will come, but for political reasons, we can't be proactive about it."

Yugoslavia is the template for yugoslavia, palestine for pal/issie but the jury is still out here. The odds are in your favor though over time but if it does come hopefully later rather than sooner and after we are out.
