reagan was a polarizing right winger in those days.

He was very likeable, and up against the anemic Jimmy, and later Mondale, it was a good example of bipartisan support at the polls.

I can't think of a better example. Of course, it was 25 years ago, and the partisan splits in the USA are worse I think, due to pols stirring the culture war pot from Clinton on. I'd be very surprised if any candidate now could muster 50% of the opposite party's vote.
