After Rough Year, Kodak's Perez Wows 2006 CES

NEW YORK - During his presentation Friday afternoon at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Eastman Kodak Chief Executive Antonio Perez surely enjoyed the company's moment in the sun.

After confronting a previous year of disappointing financials and speculation that the company was not keeping pace with the digital imaging revolution, Perez has been promising to amp up Kodak's (nyse: EK - news - people ) wattage for 2006. And at CES this week, Perez has kept that promise in spades.

Friday morning, Kodak and cell phone giant Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people ) announced a 10-year deal to implement the full brunt of Kodak's imaging technology in Motorola handsets. Kodak and Motorola engineers will work together to integrate the technologies.

The collaboration will simplify the process of making prints from camera phones, allowing consumers to directly print photographs from home printers, retail kiosks or upload the pictures to Kodak's photo-sharing EasyShare gallery Web site.

The Kodak-enabled camera phones are expected to hit the market in late 2006.

On Tuesday before the massive event kicked off, Kodak's research & development team took a bow as the company unveiled the first ever dual-lens digital camera. Concurrently, the company announced a free live photo communication package deal with eBay's (nasdaq: EBAY - news - people ) recent acquisition, voice-over-IP provider Skype.

As if that wasn't enough, Kodak's booth at CES is stocked with the company's latest offerings, including a Bluetooth-enabled fourth generation picture kiosk, several new models of EasyShare digital cameras, a wireless-enabled photo printer and camera dock as well as new photo management software that works on cameras, printers, PCs and online galleries.

Perez has even more to smile about: Kodak won four CES 2006 innovation and engineering awards for its digital zoom camera, photo printer and online gallery services. (See: "Kodak Unveils New Photo Kiosk")

Kodak & Sony Ericsson Exchange Technology

Following an announcement by Kodak with Motorola just 12 months ago for a 10-year global product, cross licensing and marketing alliance, today, again Kodak have announced a second similar alliance now with Sony Ericsson. With Kodak now aligned with two of the biggest mobile phone manufacturers and the ever growing pixel count in mobile camera phones, Kodak looks at present the best placed of the digital camera leaders to make the most of the digital camera, mobile camera phone evolution... below is the Kodak / Sony announcement.

Eastman Kodak Company today announced that it has entered into a technology cross-license agreement with Sony Corporation that will allow each company broad access to the other’s patent portfolio.

Kodak also announced that it has entered into a technology cross license with Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB that will allow Sony Ericsson access to Kodak technology for Sony Ericsson’s products. Kodak will also have access to Sony Ericsson’s technology.

The license agreements are royalty bearing to Kodak. Additional financial terms were not disclosed.

“We are pleased to have reached a mutually beneficial arrangement that advances the interests of the three companies,” said Laura G. Quatela, Managing Director, Intellectual Property Transactions, and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. “These cross-license agreements give us broad access to the technology of Sony and Sony Ericsson, and validate the strength of Kodak’s intellectual property portfolio.”

Separately, the companies agreed to conclude their patent litigation, which involved a subset of their imaging technologies.

About Kodak

From Glass Plates to Digital Images

With the slogan "you press the button, we do the rest," George Eastman in 1888 put the first simple camera into the hands of a world of consumers. In so doing, he made what had been a cumbersome and complicated process easy to use and accessible to nearly everyone.

Through the years, Kodak has led the way with an abundance of new products and processes that have made photography simpler, more useful and more enjoyable. Today, our work increasingly involves digital technology, combining the power and convenience of electronics with the quality of traditional photography to produce systems that bring levels of utility and fun to the taking, "making" and utilization of images.

What George Eastman began remains a goal of Eastman Kodak Company today, to provide convenience and quality to our customers so more and more people can experience the special wonders of photography and capture and re-live their more cherished moments
