"But after feminism, I don't think it became as much of a goal."

There still is the perception that the only difference between pre-adolescents is what has been imposed by society. But that is very wrong, the differences are much more fundamental than that.

I agree. However, where it really begins to show itself is during adolescence.....for obvious reasons.

In one class, the teacher was really seasoned......and I thought pretty good. In any case, one day she said she was very frustrated with this one kid, a boy, and would I try to work with him. I did. He had been homeschooled until the sixth grade when his parents put him into the public school system. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with ADHD and put on medication.

First of all, whatever medication they put these kids on it causes them to hyperventilate badly........the kid could not stop yawning. Without gettting into it, hyperventilation is really bad for anyone including adolescents. After the second day, I asked him if he could try to stop yawning.

The next day he wasn't yawning at all. I suspected he ditched the medication. He started to make good progress but I couldn't sustain it with him.....partly because I wasn't there every day and partly because I began to feel like I was was in over my head.........which I was......and I backed off. I had no training at the time and didn't know how to build on the progress. Then he started to object and that allowed me to back off completely. In retrospect, I realized he sensed I was bailing so he bailed first. From that point forward, whenever I was in charge of the class, he acted out and I had to discipline him. That experience made me realize how hard it is to be a good teacher.
