Bush and Cheney Lead Economic Cheerleading
forbes.com

President Bush and other members of his administration fanned out Friday to talk up the economy while Democrats faulted the administration's record. A sampling of remarks:

"I just went there (to the Chicago Board of Trade). A guy yelled out, in the corn pit, `Hook 'em, Horns!' So I hooked 'em. And now I own a lot of corn." - President Bush in Chicago.

"The Harleys are looking better than ever, and I'm thinking about taking one for a ride back out to Air Force Two." - Vice President Dick in Kansas City, Mo., after touring a Harley-Davidson plant.

"In baseball, just like in the economy, what counts are results, and today we have results." - Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez in Kentucky at the Louisville Slugger Museum and factory.

"It is tough to do things in a second term, but it is not impossible to do the right thing for the country." - Deputy Treasury Secretary Robert Kimmitt in Atlanta.

"Today's rosy remarks on the economy by President Bush and Vice President Cheney prove only that they're looking for good news with a microscope." - Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass.

"Middle-class Americans' paychecks are flat or dropping, while health care costs continue to rise and home heating costs are skyrocketing." - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Blair says won't step down any time soon, but 'happy' for Brown to succeed him - Tony Blair has moved to quash speculation that he will step down as UK prime minister well before the next general election, due by 2010, but said he is "absolutely happy" for Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown to succeed him

In an interview with The Sun, Blair said he owes it to the electorate who last May returned him to power for a third time to see his political programme through

"The agenda is busy and there are things I feel very, very strongly about and I want to see them through," he told the tabloid daily

Blair said last year that he will not be contesting a fourth general election but did not say when he would make way for a new leader, most likely Brown
