Indeed. Somehow, Sharon's Kadima trick looks like a posthumous trap of sorts: it successfully baited high-profile politicians out of their respective parties (Shimon Peres, Shaul Mofaz,...) only to leave them holding an empty bag.... They must feel like high-spirited passengers who boarded a cruise ship and, when already on the high seas, find out that the captain just kicked the bucket... They are now drifting away, between a Hamas storm gathering on the horizon and the deep sea infested with Likud sharks.... Re: [Netanyahu]'s media savvy. He knows how to spin on American television. And he's very dangerous. Netanyahu has repeatedly emphasized that he wants to launch a military strike on Iran. "This is the Israeli government's primary obligation," he said. "If it is not done by the current government, I plan to lead the next government to stop the Iranians." Actually, all Netanyahu has to do is to water down his wine, if only to lull the White House... If Netanyahu shrewdly tempers his radical declarations then he'll make it because, whatever his assurances about preserving Sharon's legacy (the Gaza pullout and the dismantling of a coupla West Bank outposts), Netanyahu will always look more hawkish and more jingoistic than any of his chief rivals. Only the Shas party and other fringe far-right groups can outflank him on the right yet will never be strong enough to the hold the prime ministership... However, for all Netanyahu's skill at getting round US opinion, I'm afraid he'll be on a collision course with President Bush on the Iranian issue: the latter is not a life-and-death matter for the US.
