AMD currently sells low-end Athlon 64 CPUs now for what they used to get for high end Athlons and Athlon XPs a few years back. Hardly a commodity product. If AMD and Intel can't get more than a couple hundred dollars for their flagship desktop CPUs and both were roughly the same in terms of performance and features, then I'd consider them a commodity.

with that logic you could say automobiles have been commoditized because they have four wheels...there are always new technologies that are coming up that require a full size setup...

Lets say desktops are "no growth."

Who's worse off? Intel or AMD?

AMD has all of Intel's share to take over, with undisputably superior products and prices as weapons.

Intel has "all" of AMD's share to take over, with inferior products and artificially high (yet nevertheless necessary, to sustain the bottom line) prices.

I'm not buying this line of FUD.
