BW, Re: I haven't looked at (worried about) NVDA lately, but you stimulated me to check the price and it made me smile. They've got at least something going on with DELL.>

Yeah, but wasn't that ATYT inside the Benchmark Special Keith was raving on about?

I'm not into betting on video companies, but I'd be more tempted, I think by ATYT.

Just a couple of the things we should avoid at our age and in the current interest rate environment.

Well, yes that, but also the question of future percentage gains. For someone who got into AMD at $10, or below, the current rate of weekly gains is highly leveraged. But looking at it from the point of view of fresh money - AMD at $40 is "only" 20% from here. If that arrives quickly it would be a very nice. But if it takes 4-6 months or longer of backing-and-filling I wonder if there may be others that will do that percentage in that same time or less. Then one should add the defensive benefits of diversification.

What do you mean by SUNW being the DEC of the decade? At the moment I'm a bit trigger-happy in it and consider myself a trader rather than a long because I'm not familiar with its corporate style - so far there is a lot of crashing cymbals, sound and fury - but how long with the satisfaction be deferred? However, I am intrigued. The Opteron connection and proprietary Niagra do look promising.

Brushwad: Yeah - the STX mention was me - I think it is still seriously undervalued, and that the Maxtor deal will further its market, technical, and cost domination of the HDD space. The HDD sector is not well respected, but STX's fiscal performance is killer. I think that the stock has a ways to go, and with a trailing PE of 11, the downside is limited. There was a share overhang (NewSAC) from the private phase, but this is very nearly wound out. I have a bit left of '06 $20's, a lot of '07 $20's, '07 $25's, and '08 $25's, along with a significant common position. It and AMD are my only individual stock/option holdings.

brushwud,

I haven't considered Seagate as an investment, but apparently I should have. For last year or 2 I have been buying only Seagate drives, and I have yet to see one die.

As far as SUNW being the DEC of the decade, I have the same perception, and I have not seen any evidence to the contrary. If I were to invest money I would probably even more likely go on the short side than the long side. There may be trading opportunities going both ways in the meantime for adventurous.

I think the "high end" RISC business model is fatally flawed and broken, and I don't think Sun has enough time, nor has shown enough nimbleness to escape from there to mainstream x86. I see their effort as too little too late.
