I do think it's a tiny bit ironic to be talking about how our Catholic Hispanic immigrants will help save us, in one breath, when it appears to me that the anti-immigration backlash wants to stop this because the people who are anti-immigration are afraid of being overwhelmed by Latinos, in the other breath. I agree that some anti-immigration advocates are racist about it. I see it as a culture problem. If you lived in LA or other cities with huge Mexican populations, you would see what I mean. Our anglo culture is critical to our success. The success of this culture world-wide is the proof of this. In a perfect world, I would open our borders to people from other anglo cultures first. I don't give a damn what color they are. It's the attitude that is important.

But we continue to be the Great Melting Pot. Everywhere I go I see more immigrants. Yesterday at Microcenter in the post-Christmas jam countless non-Anglo faces, including a black man in a loose white garment that came down to his ankles, and a monk in saffron robes and sandals (in January!). There is no question about it but that we are the Great Melting Pot. Eventually all the kids become American. Of course you have the older people trying to hold on to their traditional ways but they are fighting a losing battle. Sure, you have your Chinatowns, Hasidic Neighborhoods, Arab Communities, and various ethnic enclaves - but most kids, even in those communities, want to succeed in life and join mainstream America. What are the kids choices - option 1 : grow up, get a good education, get a decent job, live where you want to live, do what you want to do - or option 2 : drop out, become a loser, die early and go kill other people? If you were a recruiter for kids to take option 2, that would be a tough sell. If kids had a real choice, which option would they select?
