What I find so astonishing is the selective perception of America when it comes to its finances. Listening to the discussion on this thread, you would never know that the decisions concerning the financing of our public and private expenditures are taking place outside the US. Worse still, you could cut the complacency with a knife. The dominant view expressed here is that foreigners are poor people who live in a state of chronic underdevelopment and who have no choice but to finance our every whim or risk watching their lives become more pathetic. The truth is that they are now in the driver's seat and we are slowly but surely becoming their crack whores. They will let us know what "services" they will require from us in return for helping us out with our unbreakable bad habits. The terms of trade are turning. Future generations will face the consequences.
