And almost the minute he was elected, he proposed to have the Venezuelan constitution thrown out and replaced with a completely new one (it's 26th since the early 1800's)..

And thus, rather than only being limited to one term under the old constitution, he now can be elected to two terms.

I read that he made a comment that he felt he should remain in office for the next 10 years to accomplish all that he thinks he should accomplish..

I don't particularly care that he's anti-Bush. It's common amongst Latin rulers to disdain the "gringos" to the north.

What disturbs me is how he get's cozy with totalitarian leaders such as Castro, or how he idolizes Marxist Revolutionaries like Che Guevara...

I'm not particularly worried about his idolization of Simon Bolivar since Bolivar was essentially the "George Washington" of S. America.

However, the manner in which he changed the name of the country to "The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela" is likely making Bolivar roll over in his grave..

The guy is smart, politically savvy.. and knows how to play to the masses..

But he's also a Megalo-Maniac who is riding the tide of high oil prices, but has NO IDEA of how to actually run an economy without the benefit of the petroleum windfall.

Finally, he's been seen to support FARC forces, who are involved in the longest insurgency in S. America against Colombia. The FARC are also HEAVILY involved in drug trafficking. That is a MAJOR source of friction between those two countries.

Thus, I'm not so sure that 'ol Hugo doesn't have some designs on some Colombian territory.

Let's see what pans out in coming years.
