What I'm advocating is a more proactive examination of a three state solution. Currently it is political taboo to address that, which IMO is unfortunate.

Well, after 1 1/2 years in Iraq, I can tell you that's pretty much a "non-starter".

It's not so much that it's "taboo", because, by god, the Kurds like to talk about it. But the fact that Turkish troops are sitting right on the Iraqi border belonging to the Kurds, and Turkish special forces operating inside the region to support Turkomen resisters, I can pretty much guarantee you that a Kurdish state will lead to military action by Turkey.

As for a Sunni state, they have little economic basis to build one on, except for smuggling. The Kurds and Shi'ites control most of the oil in the country. So for the Sunnis, a state might sound attractive, but they would like to do it at the expense of the other two groups.

Dividing into 3 countries is going to definitely create land-grabbing and violent military conflict. No one is going to recognize the borders imposed by any other side. And to give even minimal attention to discussing potential borders between then will set in motion of reaction and counter-reaction amongst the various parties.

But that said, I can sympathize with the belief that if they don't want to live together, why try and make them??

But it's a lot easier said than done...

IMO, Let's see how Talibani does with that National Unity Government...
