The "right-wing" position on farm subsidies is to continue them. The argument is that do we really want to be in a position where we import all our food, as well as oil? Ponder the effect of a FOOD embargo!

Mexico, Central and South America could easily grow all the food Americans need, and would LOVE to do so. It would cost us less. The "free market" argument is to let them do so. The "security" argument is to prop up our agriculture, just as we prop up our defense industry.

My own feeling is that we'd be better off being dependent on other countries for food. It would force us to be a better world citizen, and treat our neighbors with respect.
