Cheeky, I don't turn off Avast! anti-virus, MS anti-spyware, or Zone Alarm. Ghost images have restored fine made this way. I think Norton makes a snapshot of the drive somehow (perhaps using MS shadow services) when it begins and makes the image from that. So it doesn't matter what you do in the meantime. I think you can start the program from the boot cd if you want. That's what I had to do to restore the system drive. I don't remember if there was an option to make a backup image or not when booting from the cd. Esteban
