I don't know why you think I discount Islamism. I think people who are absolutist about their religion are extremely dangerous- whatever religion they belong to. I think the followers of Islam happen to be (at this moment) some of the most dangerous religious zealots on the planet.

On the other hand. they are much more of a threat to Israel than they are to the US. I don't see them taking out more than a city here, and even that would be pretty unlikely. So, do I want to compromise the constitution over this? No.

Do I think we should be making alliances with other nations to protect ourselves from Islam? Yes. Unfortunately Bush is an absolutist himself, and as an evangelical Christian, who thinks God is talking to him, he doesn't make the most credible group leader for a really good global response to Islam. It's too bad really, but we're stuck with him right now. What is needed is a strong secular security response to Islam internationally- but I don't think a person like Mr. Bush can lead that. I wouldn't want to deal with him, and I can certainly understand why secular European countries would think he is off his rocker.

Maybe we'll get a better chance with the next president. Bush is just the wrong man, with the wrong ideas, and with the wrong ideology to bring together a good international team on this.
