Because of the topic.

If it was about some benign subject - fine.

But this was a book that many people took to heart - people that are holding onto their sobriety by their fingernails. People whose kids are addicts who took this book as an avenue to understand them. Because the disillusionment is not just about another piece of shit fraud.

It is just too cheap a shot to let go.

Like writing a non fiction account of my AIDS-ravaged life on the streets and how I joined the Marines and went to war in Iraq and found god - naming the battles I fought, the real names of soldiers that died, the pain and blood of my Purple Heart commended actions - and having it be bullshit.

Some things are too easy to lie about because no one would stoop to lie about them. OK - the bar gets lowered. There is a special place in hell for James Frey. And I hope he visits it quickly.
