The RNC is lying its head off on Abramoff. As anyone in politics knows, the Native American vote usually goes to democrats, so of course tribes have contributed to democratic campaigns over the years. But just because Abramoff came in and started extorting money from these tribes, promising access to Delay and Bush, doesn't mean tribal donations to democrats had anything to do with Abramoff. In fact, Abramoff was under orders from Delay NOT to give money to democrats, or hire any democrats. All of K Street was under the same order from Delay. What the RNC is praying is that Americans don't see the distinction between a non-Abramoff Indian contribution, and an Abramoff-Indian donation. But there is a big difference. One is a corrupt bribe because the rightwing was actively selling legislation to Abramoff and the tribes for cash. The other was ethical and legal. The whole reason for Abramoff's indictment is that his contributions amounted to bribery. The quid pro quo was there, along with fraud.
