Chavez has had more than 70% support of the public both during his election in 1998 and for the public referendum for the new constitution in 1999

Then why is there the persecution of the Venezuelan press?

What does Chavez have to fear?

And what about his moralistic "gag law" where TV and Radio programs are banned from including profanity, sexually suggestive scenes, or physical violence, from 7am until 11pm?

Sounds like something you'd accuse the right-wing christian fundamentalists of trying to get Bush to enact..

Yet.. your boy Hugo approved the law..

The law bans "vulgar" language, images of sex and "psychological" or physical violence from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. One clause prohibits "images or graphic descriptions that show real violence or its consequences."

If Bush tried that here, you'd be ranting and raving about how he's a Fascist and an enemy of Free Speech...

I find it interesting that, on one hand, you have such harsh feelings about the Bush administration, and probably the fact that both the House and the Senate are in the power of Republicansm, while on the other hand, you APPLAUD AND APPROVE of the clear monopoly on governmental power that Chavez "enjoys" in Venezuela.

Why is it that something you'd fight tooth and nail to prevent here in the US is somehow "OK" in another country?

Or is it that, in your form of democracy, you'd ALSO try and restrict what people can and cannot say, watch, or do??

Hmmm.....

I guess we're just going to have to see how things pan out in that country.. I certainly don't wish to give him an excuse for creating a national crisis.. I'm content that the Venezuelan people are smart enough to finally figure out that Chavez is no less corrupt and inept as any of his predecessors.

Politicians, no matter what flavor, all enjoy power and money. And sowhere, along the way, some manage to accomplish something productive.
