HALF MOON BAY, Calif. — Forget the doom and gloom.

The semiconductor industry has a new and major growth driver — content, said Brian Halla, chairman and chief executive of National Semiconductor Corp.

In a presentation at the Industry Strategy Symposium (ISS) event here on Tuesday (Jan. 10), Halla said the semiconductor growth engine is entering into a new era, thanks to the advent of MP3 players, wireless broadband, video-based search engines and other emerging technologies.

“It’s phenomenal,” he said. “We are driven by content.”

Digital content is expected to drive a new wave of growth in the semiconductor and other businesses.

“The first dot.com boom is upon us,” he said.
