Doesn't sound like a place where democracy will "flower" (as Mindmeld puts it), does it? Afghanistan is probably about the same. A lot of folks view these countries from their own US suburban perspective, and don't understand that when you have no institutions, social interaction is based on power, not fairness or the rule of law. And there is such a huge gap between them and us. Imagine not being able to call someone in Orlando because you are on two different phone systems. That level of backwardness is hard to imagine. If they can't finesse a common phone system, how are they going to maintain a much more complex concept like democracy? What the hell are we doing there? The oil??? ted
