We're supposed to believe that the United States would have invaded Iraq if it was an island in the Indian Ocean and its main export was pickles, not petroleum.

Nonsense. Who believes that?

Oil was part of the reason we went to Iraq. It was certainly not a good idea to have a madman like SH sitting on top of the second largest proven reserves being located right next to the largest proven reserves. US national security is inextricably tied to our economic security as well. It is in our national interest to make sure that oil flows freely to the US and global economy.
