I use Fidelity (for my Keough) and Ameritade for my IRA and Regular Cash Brokerage Account. If your friend is as bearish as you are and wants to stay in cash, then Fidelity is the brokerage house for him since he will get a higher rate of interest (at least a full percentage point more) on cash balances, which will more than offset higher commissions. But then again if he trades often and tries to time each peak and valley of the market, then Fidelity offers very nicely reduced commissions. I like Ameritrades's free streamer for real live stock Quotes. Moreover, I like their Electronic ACH System where I can deposit/withdraw money at no charge from my Brokerage Account via my online bank whenever I want. Fidelity, on the other hand, has a tremendous number of mutual funds which are free to buy and sell in an IRA/Keough Account. As for credit cards, Ameritrade and Fidelity both offer them. But I primarily use Chase Rewards (Mastercard) where I get back 1%-2% on all purchases. It's 2% back on gasoline purchases. Discover offers a credit card like that too. I rarely use checks. I pay everything by credit card or electronically via online banking. Never had a problem. Moreover, I just use cell phones. I have 2 (SE K750i & SE K700i), my wife has one, and my three sons have one each. We haven't had a landline phone in our house in over 10 years. When necessary I send faxes via bluetooth. I don't like wires.
