Up here (and I expect this occurs in many other places),
there are many benches placed along trails as memorials
to people who spent a lot of time in those areas.
Often, the benches are donated by friends or family
through the "Friends of" groups for various conservation
and park areas. There is usually a small metal plaque
affixed, with the person's name, and sometimes a few
lines of poetry. I often photograph these when I
come across them. Around Christmas, we often find small
arrangements of evergreens with a red bow attached
to the benches - no doubt, placed there by a friend or
family member. The benches seem like one of the nicer
tributes that I can think of for someone who probably
spent a lot of time in a special place. I would actually
not be at all surprised if the decorated Christmas tree
may have been for a similar reason as the evergreen
arrangements which i've mentioned above.
