Tues...08:49 CAJ Kaufman Bros. says Canon, Toshiba stole C.E.S. show (63.70 )

Kaufman says its biggest surprise at this year's C.E.S. conference was the demonstration of a new flat-panel technology from a joint venture of Canon (CAJ) and Toshiba (TOSBF -- pink sheets), called surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) technology. It uses essentially the same principle behind standard C.R.T. displays; however Canon and Toshiba have discovered a way to implement the technology in a F.P.D. form factor only a few inches deep. Firm says the demonstration unit was astonishing, clearly surpassed the image quality of any L.C.D. or plasma display, boasting contrast ratios of 100,000:1 and a pixel response time of 1 ms. Firm calls the image quality "equivalent to looking out a window".
