I was still living at my parents home when you got air.

My grandfather was temperamental, and he did not get along well with the ice man. His was the first house in town to have a refrigerator. The ice man thought it was a fad and said "you'll be back." The fad faded about as fast as the car fad.

Depending on what part of the country you are in, air conditioning can be essential or a luxury. In the Great Plains both air conditioning and heat are important. If forced to choose, I would forgo air conditioning but not heat.
