Since I find it irrational, I don't see a reason to debate the fine points.

I find it irrational, too. If you think I'm trying to discuss the fine points of that irrational position, you are mistaken. I am surprised at having to declare that.

There are not only two positions on this, that irrational one and the opposite and one where the warrant is the holy grail and intel be damned. Everything that doesn't conform with your warrant position is not merely fine points of the opposite extreme. There's a lot of stuff going on here. I'm surprised to find you so black and white on this topic, particularly on this thread.

...dismantling large parts of the Constitution de facto permanently...

I think that is a pretty major overstatement. I have some problems with some of these actions, I might be convinced to be more opposed to them but I don't think such exaggeration is going to do the trick.

nd the government that conservatives distrusted and blamed for most of the nation's ills since the 1960's is now a trustworthy, infallible defender of freedom that can do whatever it likes, while we sleep well knowing they will only act in our best interest against the bad guys, and never hurt the innocent in the process.

That's the perch I see lots of people on. Since I find it irrational

I find that idea irrational as well, but I don't think that many people actually hold that view. I don't even think many of the supporters of many of the measures that have been taken or proposed support that view, at least not if you are looking at people who are sufficently self-aware and articulate to express what they think and why they think it.
