I think for a start we should quit calling it a war on terrorism. That's stupid. Let's call it fighting terrorism, or combatting terrorism, which is (presumably) what we've always been doing. Everything hasn't changed (hopefully) since 9/11- we still have the constitution, and as soon as Bush leaves the government might even respect it a bit more, and will still be fighting terrorism- forever and forever and forever. As long as terror works, and it always will, I don't see terrorists quitting (whether foreign or domestic)- so let's drop the war rhetoric, since this is an issue that will last forever, and I think everyone would be able to communicate better without one half of the debate trying to ram the US flag (under the banner of emergency) up the nose of the other side.

(and I'm not saying anyone here is doing that nose ramming- I'd just like to see a more sensible rhetoric regarding combatting terrorists- seemed a good time to bring it up)

You need to explain what constitutes intel for you

Intel seems to me to be about identifying who is the enemy, how and by whom they are funded and provisioned, and what they're up to. We do this to disrupt them. It seems to me that any records or human sources that can provide that information are fair game.

I do not presume to know how intel folks do their jobs. I don't know which techniques are feasible and which techniques are cost effective. I would expect them to use all means at their disposal to get those answers.

I balk at torture, as do you, and I balk at misusing any data that's collected. And at the process being intrusive if it doesn't absolutely have to be. There might be some other things I'd balk at but they don't come to mind right now.

its importance in the war on terrorism and whether that role will change if the war can ever end.

The war on terror seems to me a lot like the Cold War. It will end when it ends, hopefully with a whimper rather than a bang. Meanwhile, we need to keep a close eye on them, have a strategy, and fight skirmishes as required. It's simple prudence.
