FWIW...I own and have used a Globalstar phone since the beginning. I was the 26th subscriber to the service. $1,500 bucks for the phone. The problem, dear Maurice, is NOT in the pricing. The problems are two:
1 - The phone stinks
2 - The service is not up to accepted standards

I have used in the rural Berkshires. I have used in NYC. I have used it during the Northeast blackouts. I have taken it all over the USA. I even lent it to friends traveling to northern Canada and Central America.

The original gun/brick was not up to routine use. Period. Dropped calls constantly and inconsistent service. Terrible battery life. Difficult to fully charge. I think GSTAR would have been better off with the existing satellite system and a MUCH BETTER handset.
