In raising my two sons, at age 11 both were given the RIGHT <b/> to not have to ask to go anywhere they wanted as long as the kept us informed of where they were. They both grew up trouble free the older I was told by a high school teacher that he was one of the few that walked the straight and narrow. (Now a cop) The younger grew up spending 25 of his first 29 years in school, never once in trouble, now a psychologist (unfortunately)lol.

Through out their early years toddler through 10, discipline was instantanious and consistent, wrong today, still wrong tomorrow, and still wrong forever, the inverse was also true if it was ok yesterday, it is ok today, and it still is oktomorrow. I did not believe in grounding punishment/corrective action had to be quick enough that there was still a connection between the action and punishment. I also never allowed "you wait till Dad comes home".

Children also need a rewarding goal to work for, the two leading in my mind would be sports or religion, others could be music, thespian, debate, etc..

My kids was sports, both excelled at Track and Field, The oldest went to college on a decathlon scholarship. The younger on Hammer, Discus, and Shot Put. In high school neither ever considered drugs, tobacco, or alcohol as that would have interferred with their Track goals.

I did many things wrong, but it all worked out I think.
