re: I think most of them have been drummed out of positions of influence a long time ago. Remember in the early 1980's when it was suggested that Barry Goldwater was insufficiently conservative to be in the Republican party?

I remember it differently... Goldwater lost because he was considered a radical. "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice" was overboard. Now, "Extremism in the defense of liberty" is mainstream.

"Where the hell are the "traditional" conservatives (non-neo) and the nut case far right militia types on this??"

I think most of them have been drummed out of positions of influence a long time ago. Remember in the early 1980's when it was suggested that Barry Goldwater was insufficiently conservative to be in the Republican party?

I think they were the old guard like the guy who was governor of Minnesota in the 1960s. They are men mostly in their 70s and 80s. They were against Bush and made their protests known but they were ignored........they have no influence in the current GOP party.

The truth is the US has always been an experiment in democracy. During the past 50 years, the parameters of that democracy have been expanded beyond anyone's expectations. I suspect all along the way people did not approve. Finally, enough of them exist to sway the country. You've heard the comments by educated people like Ten who is adamantly opposed not only to AA and to Roe vs Wade but to any further expansion of equal rights.

His position is confirmed by the demographics of the last election. 51% of college grads went for Bush; 47% went for Kerry. It was post grads and people who had not completed a high school education that went for Kerry. Bush and everything he stands for is what a majority of Americans want, or at least, think they want.

The truth is if you believe and desire a democracy you best start thinking what the future will be like in this country.......I think its about to change big time. Its a tell that the public outcry against Pat Robertson is so muted. And its not surprising that his apologies become weaker after each outrageous event. Ten years ago, he would never have said what he now says in public.

There are people on the Bush side who don't agree with the Robertsons but they would rather put up with him than with the equal rights for gays or with AA. They would rather blow the country's money on a senseless war than providing national heath care or reducing the impact of poverty in this country.

Ironically, I suspect the last bastion of democracy may turn out to be the EU.
