Real campaign finance reform needs to be a big, flashy issue. It's the cause and source of many of our problems today. The elected politician who represents the voter, rather than the special interest bankrollers is rare, indeed. McCain-Feingold was a start but just baby steps. I'll say it again. Why are special interest groups of any kind allowed to contribute money to candidates and campaigns? They don't vote. They have only one real motive: to supercede the will of the voters. Corporations, special interest groups and PACs are not people. But they have more power than people in the nation's capital and in some legislatures. I don't know if it can be done. The same folks who control most of our information are also part of the problem. Major media, watched and read by at least 80% of Americans are owned by multinational corporations, all. Many have huge conflicts of interest. GE: Huge defense and government contractor. Murdoch: a government whore worldwide. There are huge conflict of interest problems with all of them. And they make HUGE amounts of money from paid political announcements. We're going to get no help from major media. Somewhere, there must be a candidate smart enough, honest enough, and dynamic enough to break through the smokescreen and return our nation to democracy.
