They are only sheltered if they are a main interest.

What I mean is that you may have a primary interest in something like woodworking and you spend your time and energy perfecting that craft. Someone else may excell in internet delivery and can take away the market by competing in their transportation strucure even with inferior product. This means you must shift your focus from what you want and know to some other area to survive.

The reality is that increased global competition favors companies large enough to compete in multiple areas and force competitors out of business by constantly making them expand their efforts without expanding their product line.
