I guess I wasn't very clear. I do remember a senator from Illinois who made that statement in the early Reagan administration. I thought it represented a dangerous shift in the viewpoint of some conservatives if they thought that Goldwater wasn't conservative enough. I think Goldwater's credentials as a conservative were sound, but he wasn't conservative in the right way, moving more in the direction of libertarian. I often wonder if that senator who uttered the statement was Dan Quayle, but there was too much time between the statement and Quayle becoming a factor in much of anything.
