I've always felt Alito would be confirmed, barring some total gaffe on his part. I'm not happy, but we'll have to see what he does on the court. So many SC justices have drifted to the "left" position of supporting citizens over government once on the court, that I have hope Alito will too. Some of the testimony today seemed to indicate that he can be persuaded.

Two comments:

Its rather sad that we have to hope they will drift 'left'. When did democratic principles and the Constitution become the exclusive province of the left?

Secondly, it really is different this time. Many important positions on the Court and in the rest of the gov't are controlled by extremist Republicans.
