Careful. I don't want to see a drunken Muktada Al-Sadr. Saddam had his father and two brothers executed. Al-Sadr is a powerful Shi'ite insurgent. His style of gaining power is described as 'quiet' by Iraqis. During the early campaign in Iraq his insurgency held off the entire US and Iraqi coalition forces for weeks, in violent confrontation. They were only a few hundred men, who held up in a Mosque, as a pocket of resistance. We laid siege to the Mosque but got no where.

It was a horrible embarrassment for us because they were succeeding and managing to rally other anti US forces. A Mullah from Iran (Grand Iyatollah Sistani) walked through the city in huge fanfare to meet with Al-Sadr and persuade him to end the insurgency. Al-Sadr had previously been able to expel Sistani from Iraq.

Sistani struck a deal with Al-Sadr that has remained a secret to this day that covinced Al-Sadr to end the stand off. Al-Sadr was the only insurgent who has ever been allowed to just walk away free in the open as were his forces. He told them to spread the word because they were not disbanded. They would reorganize and in the future they would be THE army that rules the world.

Al-Sadr has been known to organize a complete Shadow government with officers, prisons, etc that were all privately funded. Now huge amounts of resources are pouring in from Iran and Al Sadr is very quite. When ever his name does appear it is along with Sistani. We know that he has a significant number of loyal supporters in official council roles.
