DEBKAfile: Pakistan intelligence doubts Zawahiri was present at purported US strike site, cannot confirm he was killed because locals removed 5 foreigners’ bodies

DEBKAfile’s Special Correspondent in Pakistan reports:

The Pakistan government continues to express ignorance of the reported killing of Dr Aiman al-Zawahiri, the second in command of the al-Qaeda chief, Osama bin Laden. Pakistani information minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed says Islamabad has not yet received any intimation or information from the Americans about having killed Zawahiri in the Bajaur agency area of Pakistan in the Friday strike.

Pakistan intelligence sources, while quoting the American intelligence investigators stationed in Pakistan, say that some top al-Qaeda leaders including Zawahri, could have been hit when the US aircrafts fired on a compound in the Bajaur area. The operation was carried out at about 0330 hrs IST Friday by a CIA-controlled Predator surveillance aircraft firing a Hellfire air-to-ground missile, a method the spy agency has used in the past to kill high-value terrorists.

The target was a cluster of three houses owned by a jeweler named Abdul Ghafoor, whose relatives were among the victims. The intelligence sources say 23 persons were actually killed in the air strikes that smashed three adjoining houses. They added that eighteen were locals, including eight women, five children and five men. Five foreigners were also killed. Their dead bodies were removed by locals immediately after the strikes.

Their removal across the border to Afghanistan 7 kilometers from the village cannot be ruled out.

The Pakistani authorities here say the death of Dr Zawahiri can only be confirmed once his dead body is recovered, which seems to be a remote possibility. They pointed out that in December, the Americans claimed to have killed Abu Hamza Rabia, a leading al-Qaeda operative, in an air strike in the Pakistani tribal area. However, the body was not produced, leaving the American claim in doubt.

DEBKAfile adds: Bajaur is one of the seven Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA running down the border with Afghanistan. These mountain areas, home to six million inhabitants, have long been used as sanctuaries and rear bases by Al Qaeda and Taliban.

Zawahiri in his latest videotape Friday, Jan. 6, called on the United States to admit its defeat in Iraq and Afghanistan and threatened the Americans with the same defeat in Palestine.
