Gus >> Why did Germany take the political risk of such high-profile exports, in violation of its own restrictions? The immediate media mantras are that it is an offset for guilt from World War II or compensation for the war materiél Germany supposedly delivered to Iraq during the 1980s. These are not convincing. Greater leverage was necessary.

The decision was made by Chancellor Helmut Kohl personally, and it is speculated that he was subject to blackmail over the matter of the covert funds which ultimately cost him his post. The transfer clearly was not in Germany’s interest, and may indeed have been approved by the chancellor for the most personal of reasons.<<

I also thought it was guilt but I'm sure the blackmail story has substance. Reminds me of Bill Clinton and Tony Blair; Clinton who actually was the victim of MOSSAD action and Blair who I argue they "got to" by obtaining evidence on his wife's shady property deals. It's also amazing how Merkel is bending over to appease Bush. Maybe they've got something on her too? These guys stop at nothing.

Anyway, it seems Iran is still determined to go ahead with nuclear tests, maintaining it's their right to do so. So, they'll be "taken" to the UN for sanctions. Of course, if there are sanctions they won't be able to import any military ordinance of any description -- which is what the US wants. Be very interesting to see how high the oil price will go and how it will affect the world economy?

Gus, I believe Africa is your speciality.

Who are these gunmen?

news.bbc.co.uk

>>Gunmen using speedboats have clashed with Nigerian soldiers as they attacked an oil platform operated by Shell in the Niger Delta.

A Shell spokesman said five workers were injured in the attack on the Benisede oil station in Bayelsa state.

There are unconfirmed reports that some soldiers defending the platform and gunmen died in the attack.

On Wednesday gunmen kidnapped four foreign workers from another Shell oil rig in the Niger delta region.

The hostages, who are still being held, come from the UK, the US, Honduras and Bulgaria, a Shell spokeswoman said. <<
