I have done the treadmill, stationary bike and then found the elliptical.. It brings the heart rate up to the highest of any of the other pieces of equipment,is easier on the knees and provides the best cardio vascular work out..for me. And when I checked with the trainer she agreed.

Also, try going backwards after learning to go forwards.. UGH..

Of course the young chickies on there go like the dickens and I am lucky to get my speed to 50.... But do a mile and 2/3rds in 20 minutes..

Clapper,

<Anyhow, do any of you know what the target pulse rate is
supposed to be during aerobic exercise?>

There are two target heart rates - one for fat burn and the other for cardio. They are based on age and sometimes weight. Usually the machine has some graphics on it somewhere that show you what the rates are. If they don't, ask a trainer or you can find out on the web. For my age, fatburn is around 104 -110 and cardio is 124 to 130. Usually the cardio level is 80% of the recommend maximum heart rate.
