Anyway I went to check out the alternatives (which, out here are SBC)- and I was shocked to find the SBC home page still talking about bundles with this and that Long Distance!! Long Distance?! What are you kidding me? Landline phone connections with long distance for $40/month? I thought I was back in 85 or something.

With SBC buying T and VZ buying MCI/WCOM, you can expect long distance pricing to increase. Since the only remaining serious long distance competition now is from either cable (meaning all landline phone users would have to change voice providers) or Sprint (which I don't think has landlines at 80% of homes) you can expect the price wars of the past 10 years to cease, and even see prices increase. Sad but true.....

SBC deliberately makes it almost impossible to see how much it costs for these basic utilities per month.

Of course - they don't want to compete on price. And now with the independent long distance providers gone, they often don't have much of anyone to compete with.

I sincerely hope Google shuts this whole system down. What a hindrance to productivity.

Yeah right. You want Google to offer free high quality voice, and pay for it with ads on their web page?

Look, if you want 100% high quality voice service, someone HAS to pay for it. Wireline voice has been a zero to -5% revenue growth business for the past few years. An industry with that growth rate should be a cash cow. The phone companies are cash cows, with no growth outside of wireless and data. You want virtually free data and wireless? Which company is going to be stupid enough to build the network that offers excellent data and wireless and then........give it away?

I'm pretty happy with SBC. I have their fastest tier of DSL and unlimited long distance. With two numbers, long distance for both lines, DSL and taxes my bill is $89.
