I'm not real knowledgeable on this but I would imagine that it is a lot easier to grow pot than to distill liquor.
Having the govt sell pot isn't the answer for obvious reasons: 1) when "regulated" and sold in govt outlets the costs will be high as they will have to cover the wages, infrastructure regulation costs etc Don't think the savings in the court system will cover it because most charges never make it to court now. Read "NO SAVINGS HERE"
2) How does the gov't control the strength????? and can you guarantee me that kids won't turn their noses at a weaker state sanctioned drug and still look for a supply of a stronger thrill
3) no matter how the stuff would be priced people that steal hydro will be able to produce stronger product and sell it cheaper.

Methinks that the argument that gov't outlets for this stuff are going to magically cure all existing evils is simply fluff from those wanting to legalize for very personal reasons

Actually it grows like a weed, doesn't need much much fertilizer, and could easily replace some of the tobacco farms we have already. It is far less expensive to grow than grapes. And the price because of the difficulties faced by the growers would certainly allow the government to make more per ounce than the mark up on booze. It grows wild in the fields for heavens sakes. Grow Ops are simply because growers want to thwart the government helicopters that are out every day searching for growing operations.
